Preparing Your Heart: 5 Body Positive Affirmations to Speak Before Your Photoshoot
Updated: Sep 27
How do you usually prepare for a photoshoot? Do you find a makeup artist? Consult your friends about your outfit? Freak out a little bit because you have don't feel confident in yourself?
Oh wait, did that last one get you? Good. Photoshoots can be intimidating when it's something intimate like boudoir, or professional like branding - funny how both of those are about telling your own story, huh? Anyway, conquer those fears with these 5 affirmations (with scriptures for my #churchgirls)
#1: My measurements are not my story.
Inspired by Matthew 15:17-20 - “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
Did you finally lose enough weight to fit in that dress you bought back in June? If yes, go you girl! If not, go you girl! Your body tells a rich and beautiful story, one that isn't defined by made clothing sizes and fluctuating measurements. So feed yourself encouragement, not critique.
#2: This body was made with good intention for divine purpose.
Inspired by Ephesians 2:10 - "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
This one is a little deep, but you know what? Let's take it there! Do you appreciate why you were made? Do you often question it? I don't have all the answers, but I do know that you are not an accident or mistake, and neither is that skin you're in.
#3: This body was given to me; it is an honor to be the caretaker of this temple.
Inspired by I Corinthians 6:19 - "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;"
This body you're in is a generous loan, entrusted to you for its care. That includes being kind to it. Talk to yourself with tenderness, don't tear down the temple with hateful words.
#4: I choose love for this body. I choose patience and kindness, and I release resentment.
Inspired by I Corinthians 13:4-7 - "4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
I meet so many women, in and out of the studio, that desire change for their body. There's nothing wrong with that, but when we rush that change and scold ourselves for the pace, we do more harm than good. Your preparation for your photoshoot may frustrate you - the makeup may not sit quite right, your skirt might not fit quite right anymore, your bra strap too tight, but be patient. All that is easily fixable. Harder to fix is photos that show a disappointed version of you instead of truly joyful one.
#5: When this body demands rest, I will provide it.
Inspired by Mark 4:35-38 - "That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
The first thing I tell my clients when they ask me how to prepare for a photoshoot is this: Get some rest. Not just for the sake of preventing baggy eyes, but good sleep gets your spirit right. A refreshed body comes through in photos and you'll be so thankful when you see the results. And remember this: you don't have to EARN rest, it is a need just like food, water, and air.
